More about Donating to the Community Foundation

Your gifts to the Community Foundation can help you Preserve the Past, Build the Future, or Create a Legacy in DeKalb County. Through the foundation, you can give within two categories of funds: permanent or non-permanent funds. Gifts to permanent funds are never spent, but are wisely invested to produce income that is granted; non-permanent funds are generally associated with short-term community projects. Within these two categories, there are basic funds designed to meet your needs and respond to the challenges and opportunities in our area:

  • Unrestricted funds: Gifts in this category provide the greatest flexibility in allowing the community foundation to respond to the community’s most pressing needs, now and in the future.
  • Field of Interest funds: These funds allow you to target your area of charitable interest, such as education or the arts, and the community foundation board grants income to nonprofit groups that address your designated area of interest.
  • Designated funds: These funds are designed to ensure support to one or more specific charitable organizations named by you.
  • Donor-advised funds: Through these funds, the donor(s) makes suggestions on which charities will receive support each year.
  • Operating Funds (Building Blocks Campaign): These gifts provide support for community foundation operations.
  • Scholarship Funds: These funds provide educational scholarships that benefit area students.
  • Tribute/Memorial Funds: You can donate to an existing Community Foundation fund or establish your own to honor or memorialize friends, family members or loved ones.
