DeKalb's VOICE... (Views, Organizations, Improvements, Changes, Examples)
DeKalb’s VOICE is a youth grant making advisory group with eighteen student members. VOICE meets once a month during the school year to learn about the community and its charitable needs. The group solicits and reviews grant proposals from nonprofit groups three times a year. They carefully research the requests in order to make wise granting recommendations to the community foundation board.
DeKalb’s VOICE has five members each from DeKalb, Eastside and Garrett High Schools and three students from Lakewood Park Christian School. The students are grade 8 through grade 12. Once appointed, each student serves on the group through his/her high school graduation. As the seniors graduate, the members appoint new eighth graders to the group.
In addition to grantmaking, VOICE members learn leadership skills and gain a broad knowledge of the community as a part of their meetings. They also volunteer their time to various nonprofit groups in the county. They are working to build an endowment fund.
The Dekko Foundation and DeKalb County Community Foundation sponsor DeKalb’s VOICE, working together to grow a new generation of philanthropic leaders.
